The problem: I can only run Dreamweaver off the computer through which I installed it. On every other school PC Dreamweaver boots up, asks what view I want (Coder/Designer), but then a panel pops up titled Dreamweaver Product Activitation and tells me there is an error in the software and it must be reinstalled.
So what does Dreamweaver install on the local computer that allows it to run? I already looked into the registry keys; I exported the registry keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MACROMEDIA/DREAMWEAVER on the PC through which Dreamweaver was installed and imported them to a new PC, but the same error came up. Is what I'm trying even possible? If so, am I just missing some registry keys, or is it something else?
possibility 2: software liscenses for institutions like education, gov, etc, have special multi-computer licenses - meaning, you can run the app on x amount of computers (x being number of licenses purchased and is equal to number of computers which can have the software installed). There may be some security step in place which wont allow it to run on any computer other than which it was installed.
just a shot in the dark with those, but definately possibilities i would guess.
i think possibility 1 is probably partially right in that some files, like the reg keys, are necessarily installed on the computer through with Dreamweaver was installed. There must be some files other than or in addition to the reg keys that need to be present on a PC for Dreamweaver to work. The only solution to this problem would be finding those files and transferring them to whatever PCs I chose to run Dreamweaver on, or just to install Dreamweaver on the server itself, but because its a school server this will never happen.
Dreamweaver will not install properly on individual workstations from a network server.
Reason
Dreamweaver was not engineered for network installation (nor can it run from a network). Dreamweaver needs to write to the local Registry of each machine upon which it is installed.
Solution
Install Dreamweaver on each system for which a license is available. In accordance with the End-User License Agreement, you must have one license per person or per machine where the product is going to be installed.
