BTW "notetab" either lite ( free) or Pro (paid) is way more versatile than notepad ..for everything you would use notepad for ..plus some ..
As for Macromedia stuff, what version are you using? For example, Dreamweaver 4 won't let you paste/code in in asian characters, but Dreamweaver MX will. Same with Fireworks, older versions don't allow asian fonts, newer versions do.
I code pages in Japanese on a regular basis, and used to run into this problem all the time. :) Hope that helps.
Notepad (on Windows) won't accept foreign characters, period.
I normally have to cut from the source file, as the rendered characters won't usually paste correctly.
By the way, one of the "gotchas" with Japanese text is that sometimes you'll FTP a document to your server and discover that it has turned into "mojibake" (gibberish characters). If you have this problem, try uploading the Japanese document as "binary" instead of as "text".
