Problem with random 404s

I seem to have a problem with FP or the server delivering 404s at random.The pages are all linked But i've noticed @ times with mouse over the url shows OEM computer/dir and @ times shows www.site/dir.Is this a Problem? On the web sometimes it changes sometimes it wont. I have noticed that the times when OEM computer/dir shows is the time most 404s appear but not all ways. Also is their a list showing what error messages mean some where.
Also I have noticed a lot of disfavor on WebmasterWorld with FP what are the options and is there a general publication on web site construction.

And also I have a forms page I built that comes to me and it shows at times [front page componet]in upper left of form.I take it out of html but it seems to have a way to sneek back in.
Any advise would be appreciated.

The second problem you mention is to do with your form either
1)being offline or
2)not being set up correctly

Frontpage automatically inserts the [frontpage save results span] message into pages with code when you save or close a web.
If you still see this message after you upload the page, there is a problem with your form that needs to be fixed before the message will disappear.

On your 404 problem, the only thing I can suggest is that if you use custom 404 pages, make sure all the links are to absolute URLs, not relative links to the directory in which the page is place. I don't know if this was the problem you were having with 404s, but I didn't really understand what you meant

The 404 thing, any chance you have a folder on your computer known as OEM Computer, or that is the name of the computer itself, or perhaps maybe even a username?

If you copy and paste things outside your web (or from another FP web, the program will not update some of the URL's, or rather link through a filename as opposed to http://

You have to keep your eyes on these sort of things with FP because the program will do some things automatically, without notifying you.

What version of FP are you using?

There is an option on both progs (diff. places) that will allow you to check your links. What I done before finding out this wee prob is copy and paste your web to a new location so any "filenameS" that are used as links are now broken. Then you can let the program automate the task of finding what ones should be changed.

If you have FTP'ed your site before, this has been known to affect the FP components, including forms. If the FP components were not working, then you'd see this message. Try making a new form on a new page maybe? See if the same thing happens.

I would'nt worry about non-FPers ;) Some members here who use FP have highly respected sites, you wouldnt be able to tell what editor they used. Whatever works for you (and works on the web)...works!

This is my favourite 'feature' of frontpage ;), that, and the way the html code viewer doesn't show you all the HTML code.....

I am using FP98.I do have a folder "OEMcomputer/site" that I assumed was the root web that FP creates. The form links seemed to have pick this up on some links but not all looking like this "OEMcomputer/name/dir" which appears to have been the bad boys playing with the "pesky webbots".
Changing to www.site/dir appears to have solved the problem and also the FP components span. I hope!

PS-Are there updates to FP98 or should I just change to a later version.

Most that have upgraded to FP 2000 agree its better, and removes some of the "badness" of the 98 editor.
