HTML Editor/Validator

I do all of my web design in notepad because one of my rules is "If a page goes beyond the limit of a notepad doc, it's too big" and I hate the extraneous code most WYSIWYG editors generate.

I want a inexpensive HTML editor (free, is possible) that I can do at least the following with:

a. Validate my HTML as I develop the page(s).
b. Color code tags.
c. Find/Replace text.
d. Load up like notepad - no filters or plug-in delays like with Dreamweaver UltraDev.

I'm currently using HTML Kit. I'm not sure if it does everything you specify although it probably may. I use it because it ports html tidy for checking if the html is valid.

You could try the W3 Consortium's Amaya -- an editor/browser:

[w3.org...]

I didn't have much luck with it myself when I tried it. But it has been updated a few times since.

For free online validation, try W3C's HTML validator:

I'm personally a very big fan of Macromedia Homesite. It doesn't take as long as Dreamweaver UltraDev, but it takes longer than Notepad :)

I've never been happier with any other product I've used (except with maybe Macromedia ColdFusion Studio... which is almost the exact same product).

According to this page [suodenjoki.dk] you can integrate Tidy into FrontPage.
