Does anyone still use frontpage express

Or is it just me?

Have I just got used to it, designing my simple old text and graphic sites? Or does anyone else genuinely find it a good (and fast) WYSIWYG editor for those with only basic HTML understanding and nothing particularly complicated to design?

All the other freebie apps I tried out seemed to have a pretty non-standard interface or steep learning curve.

Could just be me though ;)

Hi all, by the way, I'm pretty new. Nice to be here.

I use Frontpage express occasionally as it is simple, free and easy to use. It's good for tables and image maps, without introducing all of the overhead of other WYSISYG editors.

Hi - Nice to have you here as well :)

I am generally a simple kind of guy. If I need complicated web stuff, I call upon a more able team than me. However, there is a HUGE difference between Frontpage Express (I didn't know it was still available) and Front Page proper. If you ever take the leap, you will be glad you did. Many people here would urge you to go down the dreamweaver route, but - as you say - the learning curve is great.

The problem with Express is that if you ever want to change the look and feel of your site (like add a menu item) you have to go and do this on every page. You never QUITE get the pages looking the same and it very quickly looks amaturelike.

The real thing, when you get there, will be a breath of fresh air for you I expect.

thankyou for the kind reception, al! :)

That's what I figure. I've actually got a techie person doing the coding on my newest site, (using things like CSS and fancy Javascript) and I'm just looking after the front end content: which is tough enough, even for a relatively small, relatively static site!

What's fun is changing my mind about the design layout half way through and watching her go pale ;)

I don't use FP Express much anymore, but I like any program that still fits on a 3 1/2" diskette :)

I use FPE very occasionally too. As richlowe mentioned, its great for a quick table design. I use it less frequently now as my template database is building up in my text editor.

Wow, FPE. I completely forgot they even made that little program a few years back. I use FP '02 on my XP machine, but for light editing on my laptop which runs Linux I now use Nvu. As far as modern free programs go, Nvu pretty much is the best you'll find today.

Amen. It seems like even text editors take up a few megs these days

Neither FrontPage or Dreamweaver, even the latest versions, produce code that will validate, and they also produce a ton of code bloat. If you care about your keywords ranking better learn to write code by hand.

That just shows you have little or no experience with FP or DW. You can make perfectly valid code with either of these packages. WYSIWYG software is a tool, just like your beloved text editor. You can make valid or invalid code with either. Use whichever one makes your job easier.

The old line that using WYSIWYG software creates bad code is not really the issue it once was, if indeed it ever was an issue...now back to the topic at hand.

I was just installing a few virtual PCs with Windows 2000 on them and noticed the old FrontPage Express option in there. I added it in to the install just for nostalgia sake. That was quite a handy little WYSIWYG editor for basic HTML.
