Nothing fancy - just color coding

Hey everyone,

Currently I use Dreamweaver for my web design coding. The only reason I use Dreamweaver is for the color coding in the text view. What I don't like though is when it shifts code around on me and messes up my style of organizing the code. I was curious if there are any free programs out there that have nothing fancy but just a plain text editor. The only feature I ask for is color coding like dreamweaver. Does anyone know of any programs like this?

Thanks :)

Wes

GNU/Linux: kwrite
Windows: araneae (though I don't believe it'll handle PHP or Java)

Kwrite handles everything, if you're stuck with Windows you could have a go compiling it there (if you're brave!) but I'd recommend moving to Linux anyway :-)

Well my testing server is linux so I could always move to that. Does it come compiled in with Redhat?

Kwrite comes with KDE, and KDE comes with RedHat so I guess so :-)

Try Crimson Editor or conText.

I use Crimson Editor as well.

For HTML, PHP, CSS, Jass, and more.

I even programed a few of my own formats into it. You can create your own format files for syntax words and functions.

I like it most because it highlights so well - yet is so simple. No deep graphical interfaces or extra uneeded menus.

Well I usually recommend windows-people the notepad++ editor. Just like the Kwrite is has colorcoding for lots of different programming languages.

so checkout:
[notepad-plus.sourceforge.net...]

a better editor (just the best ever made) but a little hard to learn is Vim. Donno if it exists for Windows but I use it all the time on my linux-box.

It exists for windows...
[vim.org...]

good luck and may the source be with you! :)

Bas

For quick editing of HTML I use NoteTab Light but I have to agree Notepad++ is great, it color codes your source depending on the file type and the newest version includes macros so it is a wonderful FREE tool that I have used to replace any other text editor (Notepad) in Windows.

If you can learn to use vim then you'll never want to use anything else.
