Looking for Open Source Web Based HTML Editor

Hi all,

Here's my aim:
Create / Hack together / Find a web based user friendly HTML Editor that can be used to alter the content of pages.

I would like to find both WYSIWYG and text ones (or one that can do both)

It needs to be able to edit single pages at a time (IE, not one that edits a whole site like the InnoUpdater (can't remember the URL)), but preferably can edit multiple 'individual' pages.

I want it to store the content in a text file so it can be easily retrieved by other scripts.

It doesn't matter if the editor can't save to the server - I can make a CGI script that can do that easily enough.

I'm just having problems with the client side scripted part (my JavaScript is a little rusty to say the least - and a lot of the stuff I'm finding on the web is IE only).

On that point it needs to be as cross-browser and cross-platform compatible as possible.

I was thinking either a java applet or java script here.

Can anyone help?

Even just existing editors which I can 'use for coding inspiration' will be useful.

Have you looked at the W3C's Amaya browser/editor [w3.org]?

That's not what I want - I need something which people aren't going to have to install (or only a small web applet download).

Most of these people have zero or very little knowledge of HTML. I'm trying to create a nice interface so they can edit pages on the site without having to learn anything.

This looks like something you're after...can't find a download of it, though (but, to be honest, I didn't really look THAT hard). An HTML editor written in javascript that can be used w/a CGI to upload to a server...

The program looks pretty old ("recent" announcement was in '96) so I'm not even sure if it's still in existence. I did have a ton of SERPs from Google when I did a search on it, though.
