I was doing a search the other day to see if there was a "preferred" or "ideal" separator character to use in page titles. I currently use a "|" but am thinking about changing to a "/", however if it turned out something like "-" had some other advantage, SEO or otherwise, I'd probably just use that.
But this isn't the question, the answer I got from that was basically "use whatever its all the same".
But while reading about it, someone had suggested that you should title your pages in the format of "Page Title | domain.com"
I've always done mine as "Domain.com | Page Title"
Any thoughts on the differences between the two?
You could certainly argue that, with page titles very often getting truncated where they are used (tabs, bookmark menus etc), putting the domain first would make all references to pages on your site look the same, while putting the page title first would give more meaningful descriptions.
HOWEVER I would argue that that is only true when a user has multiple pages on my site open in tabs, or bookmarked together at the same time. It is MORE likely in my opinion, that a user will have just one page open from my site, with other pages from other sites filling other tabs. And in that scenario, showing the domain first would actually give more meaningful info, in my opinion.
Any other thoughts? Are there SEO related advantages?
