Sam Altman has published a document with his overview of AI, the past and the future.

Something which stood out for me was, "It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!); it may take longer, but I’m confident we’ll get there."

In the next couple of decades, we will be able to do things that would have seemed like magic to our grandparents.

I mean. It's possible.

But even the most advanced generative signal processors at the moment provide a simulation of artificial intelligence rather than representing the genuine article.

Despite the popular marketing-centric term used to describe them, pre-trained transformers aren't AI in any meaningful sense.

I concede that when a simulation of a given expression of intelligence performs so well that it becomes indistinguishable from intelligence, then the distinction (from a functional perspective) is academic.

But that observation also applies to a solar-powered pocket calculator from the 1980s.

And no-one, to my recollection, ever sought to label those devices showcases of artificial intelligence.

I am interested by the amounts of electricity various AI companies need to power their creations. I suppose they can respond to hundreds of thousands of queries simultaneously so are impressive, but individual human brains work without an electric supply, which makes them rather special indeed.

SMR (Small Modular Reactors) are in the wings. Amazon in particular is looking to set up one per data center, each capable of a couple of gigawatts up to 5gw Not soon, about 10 years out, 6 at the earliest.
