OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is facing a lawsuit from bestselling writers including George R.R. Martin, John Grisham and Elin Hilderbrand that claims the company fed their books into its "large language models" allegedly violating their copyrights and engaging in "systematic theft on a mass scale."

This had to happen at some point, and i'm surprised it's not happened earlier. They must have solid evidence to bring this lawsuit.

Every developer of an LLM is at risk of this action, and the outcome will be watched very closely.

Same deal for all individuals publishing websites, first Google et al, use cache and edit their content, now LLMs also .. no Union of webmasters to take a stand though, at least these authors have the backing to have a go. Evidence is simple, just ask the LLM what it knows about the book :)

Copyright law needs to be revisited world wide in the wake of this AI LLM activity.

G even announced (recently) that gmail and docs was folded into Bard. Where does the theft and invasion of property rights start and stop?
