PageRank Numbers

When people refer to a "pagerank of 3" is that an estimate of the length of the green bar on the Google tool Bar, or is it an actual number that can be read somewhere?

Its an estimate of the green bar length on the scale of 1 to 10 there is a link on a reply to a question Iposted on the subject a couple of weeks ago - a site search should find it for you.

Actually, the numerical value of the pagerank can be easily seen in the Google toolbar of MSIE 5 simply by passing the mouse over the "PageRank" indicator and you get a rank value, from 0 to 10 in a yellow window.

The only site I have seen that has a rating a 10 is Yahoo, not even Amazon or CNN.

Hi All

I had the Google toolbar when it first came to our attention here. However it was widely spouted as spyware and I removed it from my system. Is this no longer the case, or is it just deemed too much of a useful resource by everyone here to negate the spyware properties ?

The spyware properties of the toolbar did not change. Its spyware potential is enormous but but it would be a very dangerous move to start exploiting it. Google is probably aware that any toolbar data misuse would come back to them like a boomerang...
You can turn off the PageRank feature and then there is no spying involved if you still feel insecure.

? It does? My little yellow window just says "PageRank is Google's measure of importance of this page."

I'd love to know how to get a number from the toolbar. How do you do it?

May be he is using an older version of Google toolbar and it provides a page rank number?

It used to provide a number on mouseover - it does not on mine anymore - instead it says "PageRank is Google's Measure of the importance of this page". I know from others I have talked with - that theirs does not either - so I think you are lucky if yours does.

I am using 1.1.46-deleon. It was updated automatically for me - as I would have prefered the old style.

By the way - the latin phrase on the about screen means:

"Small things will make a large pile"

I only recently installed the Google toolbar, maybe this or last week. I will have to check on Thursday morning the exact version, but all I had to do was bring the mouse over the little green indicator. No mouse clicks involved.

I have just installed a new version of Google toolbar and it indeed has the PR number!
It has the good old phrase about "Page Rank is..." but at the end of it, it says (5/10) for this page....

Great Find - maybe someone should post as a seperate topic. I tried to upgrade mine, but it said something like "We appreciate your enthusiasm, but you appear to already have the Google ToolBar installed."

It was correct, and I uninstalled it (there is an option on the ToolBar, and then reinstalled it.) This time it got 1.1.48 Deleon - up from 1.1.46. No need to reboot or anything.

It works exactly as Awcabot and Andrey_Sea described - almost just like it used to (I think it just gave a number and that was all before - now it give X/10 and the little phrase as well).

Oh well, at least my graphic still looks pretty even if Google has made it somewhat useless :)

I just uninstalled the old google toolbar and installed the new one (1.1.48-delion) and can't get the page rank bar to show page ranks. It just remains grey, with the background. And yes, I have assured the option to display page rank has been selected, and I have tried activating it by doing a google search, and I have re-booted my computer.

Anyone else having a problem getting the new toolbar to display page rank, or have any suggestions as to how I can get it to work on my computer.

I had no problem at all!

I did not unistall the old Google bar.

The new one, uptaded itself without problem.

Researching this more myself I found Google saying that the PageRank bar may not work behind a proxy server. Well, I've got a router between my computer and my DSL line. The router may be acting as a proxy server. So maybe I better call in the network gurus to solve this.

Did the old one work? I have a router as well - the BESFR81 (which is pretty much the same as the 41 - probably the most popular router).

I had no problem getting the PageRank for either version and am not set up as anything special like DMZ.

You might try contacting Google's ToolBar help department, but I would try uninstalling and reinstalling first.

Maybe if you listed your router - others could pipe in if they have that router and it is working.

The Latest:

Finally installed latest version of IE (5.5, SP2) and now the Google page rank bar "lights up". Couln't get it to work with IE 5.5, SP1 ... have no clue why.
