Googling without a browser. I really like this one...
[toolbar.google.com...]
The Google Deskbar is a free software download that appears as a search box in the Windows taskbar at the bottom right of most Windows-based PCs. Users enter queries into the search box and results are automatically displayed in a small pane that rises above the Deskbar and overlays a corner of the application they’re using.
Once Google launch their own browser they can auto update all the Google plug-ins on IE with a warning that the software will stop working on IE soon and that they need to go get their copy of Google browser. I'm sure this is on the agenda. They just need enough features to make the swap irresistable.
Highly unlikely. Most people don't give a crap what browswer they use as long as it takes them wherever they want to go.
Any Google browser would not be aimed at "most people" it would be aimed at webmasters and SEO's so they can watch that little PR indicator.
If MS shuts down the toolbar, then a Google browser could hold the PR indicator. All speculation, but if they really want to keep the SEO's entranced then they will release some gizmo with the PR thingy on it.
..<G rep>..would not comment on whether Google is working on a program that will search within a user's computer.
..advertising links on the top of results page take up a bigger portion of the window. He said relevant ads will more likely get clicked on.
Dramatic press coverage on G-deskbar!
Maybe a weapon against Yahoo! but MS... not going to happen in the long run IMO
Cheers to the Google team who actually beat M$ to the punch on this one. Google is developing good stuff while Micro$oft goes out and puts bountys on virus coders heads. (strange they don't dump that $5M into patching their crap)
Off topic remark, but again go Google.

Now Google will IPO, they could do greedy things like show adsense ads directly on the browser. No need to make partnership deals and pay publishers to display their ads ;)
Big Brother is coming :)
And now you 'doze users all get this cool little toolie thing in your taskbar. Sheesh, some things just ain't fair.
I'm no MS hater, and kept to Windows for a long time since I had to see that everything worked in ie anyways. But then I started desktop switching. Life as I once knew it is now like a pale nostagia for the days of Space Aliens and cassette recorders now that stuff on my virtual screens is finally organized, and work seems actually to happen.
But I miss my Google Toolbar!
If you look at Stock Quotes (Ctrl+Q), Google has selected specific companies to partner with. When the "define" feature came out, they used WordNet 2.0 on a .edu site. Why not the same for Stock Quotes? If the motivation to include commercial web sites is monetary, I am saddened by this.
I doubt they took payola for these features -- they haven't it the past, as far as I can tell. The
"define" feature is way more evil. They actually do scrape commercial and other copyrighted sources in addition to WordNet. This cuts out of the loop the webmasters who poured time and energy and money into creating their glossaries, using the fruits of their labor without their prior authorization or even awareness.
I think plenty of people would convert to a Google browser, not least because it would be way cooler than IE.
No, they would not. Like I said earlier: Most people don't give a crap what browser they use since they all lead to the same content. Thinking that people will use a Google browser because it is "cool" smacks of 1999.

Because Google is in business to make money, not to be your friend or to be cool. It will get even worse after they IPO and have stockholders hounding them to increase their shareholder value. Mobs have no conscience.

Hey man - you work for Microsoft or something?
All browsers DON'T lead to the same content. The search button on IE leads to MSN, and if Google disables the toolbar on IE then there won't be a quick shortcut to Google SERPs.

But I still got it to work ok - not sure what the original person's problem was... I just have:

I would suggest that google look into adding a couple of things similar to DQSD if they're not there already, namely:
* have it show the clock when not in use, so you can disable the windows clock and save space (the pop-up calendar on right-click is nice too)
* DQSD uses Windows-S to set focus to the search box, which is really nice as it doesn't conflict with anything (though that is, of course, configurable)
* the ability to easily (like CTRL-P or up arrow) repeat or modify a previous search-or even search your past searches!-is surprisingly useful
It may not be a brand-new idea but hey, the more contributions to good ideas the better.
