I've come across the Google AMP Project a few times recently and wondered if anyone on WM any experience or opinion yet?

disclaimer: I'm generally sceptical of google's motive for anything, and my base line viewpoint is that the primary purpose here is for its own benefit.
So is AMP the best solution for the obvious problem?
What will I gain by jumping on the bandwagon?
Or what will I loose by not?
And do I really want to learn to squeeze my pages thru some new sub/super set of html? (A: no, not really. I hadnt reckoned with learning anything else new this year!)
