This is from the FAQ of the Googlebar (a ported toolbar to Mozilla browsers):

The Internet Explorer version has feature X (like pagerank). Why don't you?
The Googlebar project is an independent organization, which means that although we try to copy some of the functions in IE, we start from scratch without any access to how Google does things, and some features, such as pagerank, appear to be proprietary; others, like the new popup blocker and form autofill, are already built into Mozilla and there is no need for us to implement them. ...We currently have no plans to implement pagerank or the voting buttons due to their proprietary nature (ie, we'd get sued!).

This is all good and well (for the masses), but with the non-development of IE maybe it is time to create an official toolbar to provide for other browsers such as the up-and-coming Mozilla Firebird.

To quote jmn from a Mozilla forum:

As M$ has threatened to create its own version of Google and to put Google out of business in the next few years it would be a good idea for Google to reduce its dependency on M$ browsers and Active-X technologies.

There have been quite a few threads on this topic here. I also seem to recall a long 'Ask GoogleGuy' thread from ages ago, and he answered almost every question except this, AFAIR.

The PR bar is the only reason I continue to use IE from time to time (although rarely). If I could get it in Firebird (Mozilla) then I'd close that piece of trash down for good :-)

I now use Netscape for browsing with the no-PR toolbar. I still have IE, of course, but I find that I rarely fire it up for PR checks. Don't really miss it.

Use firebird and install the "googlebar" extension. You don't get the green bar, but all the other doo-dads work fine(page info, backlinks, etc) and best of all..it doesn't phone home.

I don't really see the point of the GoogleBar in Firebird. You've already got the search box, which is far more useful, since you can throw all of your search engines in there. For backlinks and such, it's no biggie to add 'link:'.. well, not a biggie enough for me to make my browser any more cluttered than it is (a menu, 6 buttons, location box, and search box on two teeny lines) :-)
