No, this is a new deal in the last week. It was never enabled without user intervention before.

The feature only works if the Google Toolbar has been previously downloaded, and the user must actively choose to download the feature before it is enabled. According to a spokesman for Google, the user then has the ability to turn the Compute feature off at any time.

It looks the same. The articles says if you don't turn it on it won't use your cpu. Did I miss something in the article Brett?

Brett - I hate taking sides between the owner and an admin - I can only lose :)! Anyway, I think the link Marcia pointed to does refer to the same project. In that thread, GoogleGuy talked about a trial of 500 studying proteins - looks like the same on the link you posted.

Apparently, user intervention is still required to implement the feature (at least based on my reading of the extreme tech story).

Ya, I know all about the thread marcia mentioned where Roland broke the story (thanks Roland) here first.

I was reading this new article there as meaning they've enabled something new that wasn't turned on before. Even if you opted in before, it didn't do anything. Now it does.

No I don't think I will be donating my CPU cycles to Google for it's own use. It is one thing to donate to a not for profit and/or medical research, but something quite different to "donate" to a for profit company.
