GG toolbar, what do webmaster use it for?

What features are useful for webmasters?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently researching an article on search engine
toolbars, and need to know the different ways that webmasters use the google toolbar while promoting and
running their websites.

I use mostly the pagerank and highlight tool so I can get a quick overview of the keyword density of a competing site in Googles search results and then try to imitate that density for my webpages.

Any thoughts on how you use it would be greatly appreciated.

Surf with the google dmoz category button. Whenever you hit a site in an industry that interests you, click the button. Then you'll say the top PR sites for that industry, go to those sites and follow links around until you see another site with a category button in a different but related dmoz category...very interesting way to get a feel for the top players of an industry.

I use it to save me typing google.com in the address bar....and yes definetely the highlight...if im scanning for things i'll leave it on and skim through pages.

PR/categories thingies are turned "off".....apart from that it looks nice? ;)

I use the page rank tool, the autofill tool and the pop up blocker.

PR's a bit dodgy right now.

Mostly just useful for doing a quick seach. And for a quick check of backlinks for competitors - see if they got any I haven't.

Highlight button useful for finding hidden text.

The google toolbar is important to our website promotion due to:

1) Ability to quickly see the PR (pagerank) of a site, particularly for:

Checking the competition PR and find out what we can do to leap past them!

Asking the sites with good PR to link to our site - This helps our PR go up

Checking the current PR status of our site, and particular, different pages within our site

2) Ability to see the category in the directory the site is listed (there are two category buttons, one to search with, the other shows the directory category of the current page)

3) The "next and previous" button is also nice. If you do a search, then click a link on the search results, you can, without having to go back to the search results, click the "next" button and it takes you to the next search result!

My 2 cents.

Toolbar not used to search as my IE address bar defaults to Google search. I only use:

1. Highlight tool
2. Popup Blocker
3. PR (only to see what clients whine about - dispite being #1)

Ah... I take it that you're not strictly a journalist, but a webmaster.

And this article, it wouldn't happen to be for use as content on one of your web sites, would it?

Monkscuba never considered that about the hidden text, thats quite useful. martinibuster yes it's for an article on my site.

Interesting that nobody has mentioned the cache tool as I find this valuable because many times I have noticed that the actual page is different than the one google has indexed and hence the one I should be concentrating one. Thanks everyone for the replies.

One final question, how do you do quotes on this community?
