Google Search API key Code?

Hello everyone. I have been involved in SEO for a little over three years, but I didn't start to read forums until about 8 months ago. My point being is that I got left behind when Google was handing out Google API Keys so that SEO consultants could perform multiple keyword ranking searches without getting your IP blocked or, God forbid, banned.

So my question is really more of a topic for discussion so that I can understand this topic better. Please tell me your experiences with this if you were one that got a Google Key and is it what I have described above or do I have it wrong all together. If I am right is there anyway that I can still receive a Google Key, or is there a new better way?

I currently use Web Position Gold, and yes I know Google gives this as the example of the wrong thing to use but my employer insists upon using it for monthly submissions (which I think are futile, but they bring the company revenue). Is there better software out there (WebCEO and such) that you have great opinions of? Please help. I look forward to all of your advice as I am at my wits end on this subject.

You can't get the SOAP API key, but you can get the AJAX API key.
