I'm pulling my hair out over this. I need to find out what the approximate position of my site's search list in Google is. I know most of you are going to get back to me (I hope) and say it's dependant on what keyword you use but what exactly do you mean by that?
This is where I'm at, at the moment.
I have a list of keywords I would like to think could be used to find my site, (although recommendations would be good)
I know I can use online tools to check you are listed in search engines.
My difficulties are that I don't know which tools are good or bad. The ones I have used have said 'not in top 50', which is useless if you are trying to benchmark you site - what is I’m result 80, 81...etc. hopefully you get the point.
I hope I have explained that well, if not let me say my end goal is to benchmark my current search position in order to carry out some corrective action and hopefully see some improvements.

confirm that your site is indexed by google by typing in
site:www.yourdomainname.com
if this doesn't bring up your domain name, then you'll not find your site whatever you do
Tech 2
if your site shows up in 1 above, then type in a phrase thats unique to your sites homepage, enclosed in ""
if your site comes up, things are looking up
Tech 3
now select google preferences, select the option for 100 results to be shown, now type in the phrase you want to be found for , and manually check the first 10 pages,
if you cant't find your site, you've got more reading up on webmasters world to do
