Hi
I've never noticed this before.

Our site a has a PR 5 for www.domain.com and a PR4 for domain.com

I always though that Google sees this as the same page?

Their is no technical requirement that example.com and www.example.com display the same page. (It's rare that they're different, but it does occasionally happen.) Therefore, assigning different PageRanks to the different URLs is technically correct.

And, of course, if they are the same page, Google should figure out how to give one of them all the page rank, and the other one none of it (which helps the surfer by eliminating duplicate pages from the search, and helps the webmaster by giving the full weight of all inbound links where it counts the most.

In short, the two URLs should harly ever have the same page rank.

After turning off some subdomains, by host has it setup so that non-existant subdomains become parked on top of the main domain. (so sub.domain.com works just like domain.com without redirecting -- all the relative links point to sub.domain.com)

The subdomains and the www domain did not have identical PRs. Some were very different. It may have to do with backward links.

bobokiki,

Welcome to Webmaster World!

Google treats each url independently.

www.domain.tld
www.domain.tld/
www.domain.tld/index.html
domain.tld
domain.tld/
domain.tld/index.html

would all be viewed by Google as distinct URLs, even though in most liklihood, they point to the same page. That is why it is important to consistently link to the same URL. Using variations with internal links or inbound links will only end up diluting PR among the different URLs. The safest bet is to use www.domain.tld since that is generally recognized as the norm and what others would do by default.
