Does anyone use the yellow & blue faces?

With all the talk about spammers, does anyone use the blue faces next to the PR bar? It seems like the fastest way of reporting spammers to Google.

tried it for five minute's > then thought what a load of rubbish.

what triggers it sets off at the plex is anyone's guess. except for this pc (works computer), i don't have the toolbar installed on any of the others.

OK. I admit it. I smiley-yellow-faced my own personal homepage a few times this month just gone, to see what'd happen. Well, couple of days ago the page got indexed via freshbot & seems to have 'stuck' in the SERPs with a fair-enough PR & position, this is after 6 months odd of being grey-barred for whatever reason.

So, I guess at least the smiley face isn't harmful. Not that I think it's a miracle way to get forgotten pages back into the index. Course, I didn't experiment with the unhappy face. Might be interesting to try out on a throwaway page, but I haven't any expendable domains lying around at the moment.

Would be nice to know what clicking the smilies "actually does". Google doesn't explain this to user I dont think.

I took a brand new site. No links, never been indexed, never seen the light of day. After uploading it to the server, I hit the smiley face a few times and the googlebot was at my site within 30 min. This was during the deep crawl too, so I don't know if that had anything to do with the prompt response. I tried it a couple of times and it worked everytime for that site.

I tried it on another site that was fully indexed. The bot didn't come.

So, if you have a fresh site to put up with a brand new domain and no links to your site, give it a try. I'd be interested in knowing the results.

It supposedly is "voting" for a site.

But ya, where do the votes go? What do they count for? Does a site that gets enough happy smiley face clicks help its ranking? and vice versa?

Maybe sites that constantly get blue sad faced by different I.P's get flagged for inspection by google.

How do you get the smiley faces? I just downloaded the tool bar on a brand new PC last month and didn't get any smiley faces. :(

Bio4ce I did a similar test to you, with some fresh content I put up, but I didnt see the freshbot come for a while, at least 24 hours, by which time it may have picked up the link from my home page. It wasnt a completely fresh domain mind you, just a new subweb. Still havn't had a deepcrawl of the subweb which is what I really want! Freshbot just keeps hitting up on a slightly different version of the same page.

Last night, before coming across this thread, I got to wondering exactly the same as others - what exactly does a vote do? So I downloaded a packet sniffer and had a look what gets sent when you vote. It sends information such as your browser etc, and some numbers, which I guess would be some sort of unique id.

Maybe it was a case of perfect timing. I've tried to duplicate the results, but no luck.

I just know that there were no incoming links to my fresh site, so how other than by pressing the vote button could the google bot have found me? Like I said, probably perfect timing. The bot was probably in the neighborhood when I called.

Click the vote button when you're offline and it says exactly the same thing - "vote sent to Google" without asking if you want to connect. For this reason, I don't think it has any effect yet, and I'm not sure what it could reasonably be used for.

This is what is on the Google Help page that describes each bittons functions.

Voting buttons: If you especially like or dislike a page, you can vote for or against the page by using these buttons. Just click the happy or unhappy faces to tell Google that you like or dislike a page as you surf. These buttons can also be used to report especially good or bad results after searching on Google. Indicate satisfaction or dissatisfaction with your results by clicking the appropriate button after performing a Google search. This feature is in testing; for now, you will not see any immediate effects by voting for or against a page.
