Wonder if someone could advise why when I look at the cache of my website via the google toolbar it appears to be an old cache. My site appears to be sydered every week and I can search for my site in Google and it appears to be dated (i.e. September 22nd)- if I look at the cache of this page it is different. Any ideas why?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, scottyman.
(I recommend paynt's welcome post [webmasterworld.com])

You'll find that the cache is different when there's a code.

eg. search?q=cache:4WVpEvImZFEC:www.yahoo.com is from the 'cache' link in the search results, while search?sourceid=navclient&q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com is from the Toolbar.

If I remember correctly, the 4WVpEvImZFEC version should continue to give the same results over time, while the version without the code will change as Google re-indexes the page.

Sorry to contradict CIML, but isn't it the other way around? The toolbar cache stays the same a whole month, while the dated cache reflects the latest re-spidering?

It's midnight here, correct me if I'm wrong... ;-)

You're correct pvdm, I had it back to front.

Sorry? It is I who should thank you for ending my ignorance in this matter.:)

I've never looked into the difference closely, but it is intriguing.

Thanks guys. I had concluded from the message that this was the case. And thanks for the words of welcome, certainly a very useful discussion forum. I feel we all sometimes need help to work out the wonders of the Internet. BTW Calum I have just realised I met you last week at WAIM - small world!

According to the time stamp on your post it's probably more like ten after midnight. :)
