We have a client that is purchasing up competitors and we have been tasked with managing all of their Google My Business pages.

They will be rebranding the businesses that they purchase. My thoughts on managing these new GMB listings include the following possibilities:

1. marking existing business as closed and creating a new one with the new name

or

2. Changing only the name on the existing page once we gain managerial control of it.

Thoughts on these 2? Am I missing another alternative?

Thanks in advance.

There is a way to transfer ownership of a Google+ Page. You first have them make you an Admin of the page, then they can set you as Owner. You can then remove their Admin access to the page.

I'd retain existing if at all possible and make the relevant edits - there's history there. That makes my suggestion number 2.
A new page will gave to start all over again. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
