Not by the owner!

One of my clients has a Google Business Page I created for them. Recently, someone marked the location as "Permanently Closed" which of course says in a big red bar that the site is permanently closed in search and maps.

I was able to remove the closure and reinstate the location.

My questions are: Who can mark a business as permanently closed besides the owners? What would stop someone from marking a competitor's website as closed? Shouldn't the owners of the listing be notified when the closing occurs?

Thanks.

Never heard of a 3rd party successfully accomplishing the removal of another business listing.

There is the public option under the Google Business Listing: Suggest an Edit > Moved, closed, or was never here Yes/No. Bing has a similar public option.

Don't know how these suggestions would be vetted.

....or what metric might trigger a change in status by the search engine.

Color me confused on this one, too.

Both Google & Bing *may* factor in other business directory listings like Yelp or Yellowpages. I try to keep all these up-to-date and check them all every couple months.
