Froogle: Would Google not make more money with an auction?

It seems to me that Google is frittering away an opportunity to capitalize on their market dominance with Froogle. It is basically a search engine for products.

eBay makes TONS of money. With a Google auction they could easily generate the capital neccesary to compete with Microsoft's coming search engine and Yahoo's acquisition of Overture,AltaVista and FAST.

Google tends to keep all of it's services tied into search. Froogle to my mind is a demonstration of just how advanced their search technology is.

The main source of revenue for Froogle will be through adwords. This will proably be the main reason for froogle. Totaly new search, more places to dislay adverts. By making froogle free for sites to list products, this makes the database very large. Large database = acurate and relevant results = more users = more ads shown = more $$$ for Google.

Google certainly could provide an auction format for selling on the 'net -- and yes, they would make more money. I just do not know how well it would integrate into their core business plans.
