It happened to my sites. You can remove any site that doesnt have index.html or index.htm. I did it i know.
See, that is from this url: http://services.google.com:8882/urlconsole/controller?cmd=fullStatus

http://www.google.com/search?q=www%2Emicrosoft%2Ecom
Google also send me this email.

The following urls/messages have been removed:
www.adobe.com/index.htmlNOINDEX
www.microsoft.com/index.htmlNOINDEX

Check their PR also.
Be sure that i dint hack any system. Just removed index.html pages. I also removed some more websites. It works.
Just used this: http://services.google.com:8882/urlconsole/controller
with my own email login.
It happened to us, and it may happen again.
That's why Google has to fix this problem.
I told this before on other thread. But everyone thought someone hacked our system. But i didnt need to hack microsoft.com. i just removed their index.html that has never existed.
What feelfree describes is different, there was a Google bug. I won't go on yet again about search engines infering more than they should according to HTTP, but that was the root of the problem.
Surely, all that is required is for
a) Google to email back stating that the page will scanned within 48 hours.
b) Explain that the page must either contain a NOINDEX robots meta or be excluded in the robots.txt file.
There is no secure way to verify the source of an email so this is the only safe procedure by which urls/pages can be removed on demand.
Kaled.
We had a couple of 'missing homepage' problems for a short time. And I'm quite sure that 99.9% of the reports about missing homepages were indeed algo related, as ours was (OOP, redirect bugs, etc.).
I stand by my second comment, however. What happened here is truly remarkable: That someone could come along and blow up the homepages of those two cornerstone sites with next to no effort. Whoa. Like knocking down a mountain with a peashooter.
The Web is still a lot like the Wild, Wild, West AFAIK. ;-)
I suggested in the previous thread we were running that google would introduce a kind of handshake model where they will let you download a small text file and you have to upload that in the root of your domain just to let google verify that you really ARE the webmaster.
However 1 thing about this "trick/joke". Only the index.html (startpage) has no PR. The rest of the domain still has PR. No idea if that will change with the next PR update but who knows :)
I also liked the google search by the way :
Sorry, no information is available for the URL microsoft.com
Find web pages that contain the term "microsoft.com"
I'd be surprised if this doesn't make headlines among the industry news.
What time is it in California? 0710? Still a few more hours to go before they walk into the office and hear about this one.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Googleplex today.
In itself, this should not be a problem. 404s are removed anyway, so the removal tool just hastens the process. The problem is because Google merge "/index.html" with "/". www.microsoft.com serves content for default.asp but not /index.html, and www.adobe.com serves content for neither, which is why the removal in the first post of this thread worked.
If the problem wasn't fixed already I'd be uploading index.htm and index.html :-)
The first mention of this merging I can find is here [webmasterworld.com], but it's older than that.
Sorry caveman, I didn't spot the 'in jest' aspect, but it's worth covering here as I can imagine some people thinking they're a victim of this when they're not.
It was really very bad 3 days and nights.
I dont want it happen to anyone else.
Someone sticky me and asked what i did exactly to remove them.
Why should i answer, will he remove some of his competitors. maybe...
I could have removed too many websites with this way, but i know that, if there wont be any solution, it will return back again to me.
Thats why, i want solution.
Thanks
