False positions

Noticed today that some keywords that i check on a regular basis have dropped in positions (in some cases by a few pages) but the average position shows that keyword as being higher than it actually is

e.g. [Blue widget badger] av pos 2.1

Yesterday this ranked pos 2 all day

Today ranks in position 7 when manually searching on google for this term

Has anyone else noticed a similar problem?

A few quick thoughts on this:

* Be aware that the position shown in your stats is the average for whatever date range you are looking at. So be sure to double check your date range setting.

* If you are looking at the date range of 'today' keep in mind that those stats typically run about three hours behind real time.

* Your targeting also plays a big part in your average position stats. Let's say you are showing ads about soccer in the US and Brazil. For a given Max CPC your ads are likely to be low on the page in Brazil where soccer is huge - and higher on the page in the United States where soccer is not so huge. But it is the average of the low and high position that is reported in your stats - and this will be different that what you actually see when looking for your ad in the US, for example.

Dougy,

Yes the same thing is happening on a few of our terms... I noticed this morning. I upped our bids to get them back on the first page...

Yeah there is one term in particular that i pay a lot of attention to.

It usually runs in position 2 where it gets an average of 6% ctr.

Today the average ctr has dropped to 3.5% and whenever i search for that term it has never been higher than #5. The average position is still showing as 2.1

Maybe its a temporary glitch

Same problem with a few of my terms. One of my terms had no problem staying at #1 for around $1. Yesterday I had a really high CTR over 20% and my ad just disappeared, until I raised my amount to nearly $2. I think there is a glitch in the position request feature that may be causing this.
