If they are ones that are searched for a lot, then chances are they have very high bids, possible much higher than your 50 cents. Try raising you max.

Agreed! Getting an account rolling in one of the uber-competitive industries can be absurdly hard. I remember a particular mortgage campaign that required $50 bids (and a handful of $50 clicks) to get the ad going on the first page, to then get some CTR and things sort of snowball from there. We routinely hit our own ads to get some CTR and ad history, as painful as that is with absurdly high bids. Usually after a brief period you can continue to lower bids (assuming you have a good ad text) and maintain position. Getting going is a pain! (and occasionally an expensive one)

However, if you have no impressions at all (i.e. have scrolled through several pages and never even seen your own ad) you may be in one of the industries that Google automatically flags for human review before showing at all (we've seen this in home business/MLM, medical and health areas, adult and others). If this is the case your ad may just be queued up for review and unfortunately this can drag on way too long at times -- a call to Google asking to expedite the review could be in order.

From the Adwords homepage:

"Your ads show up on Google almost instantly."

I think it would be fair if Google would remove that specific statement; it's simply not true.
