AdWords still a frontier? Or just for Pros?

Can the little guy still get in and make money?

I'm one of probably tens of thousands of people just now getting into Internet marketing. Sure, I knew about adwords and that people were making big money years ago. But now there's hundreds of gurus out there with courses on how to make 7.3 million dollars a month in only 3 and a half minutes a day.

While there's obviously a little hype out there, is there any realistic expectation to making money sitting in front of a computer with nothing but knowledge? Or do you have to have a company with a product or service to promote? Do you have to have a budget for tens of thousands a month to play trends and saturate your markets?

Everyone is talking about niche markets and the common advice is "Find a good niche and it's all yours". but you come to forums like this one and people are asking "Are all the niches taken?". So I have to assume that there is no longer any likelyhood of consistantly finding niches that have no competition.

Is this market mature now? Do you have to be an experienced pro to make it work?

You need major skills to succeed in this game these days.

We're still on the ground floor though so there is time to learn if one is determined.

Hi davathar :-)

I'm one of probably tens of thousands of people just now getting into Internet marketing. Sure, I knew about adwords and that people were making big money years ago. But now there's hundreds of gurus out there with courses on how to make 7.3 million dollars a month in only 3 and a half minutes a day.

There's a lot of bad eBooks out there, but there's some great ones too. Most of them use the same system with reference to adwords and affiliate programs: find a good program and send traffic to it with adwords. Sounds easy, but there's a lot of work to be done. And of course you have to be good to do it and put loads of work in.

But that's no reason YOU can't get in there and make money like the others are.

Good question. Of course one person can make money on their computer. And affiliate marketing is a great way to do it. You could use adwords and affiliate programs, or adsense and 'organic' search engine traffic. All require research, work and testing. Oh and a lot of perseverance.

Everyone is talking about niche markets and the common advice is "Find a good niche and it's all yours". but you come to forums like this one and people are asking "Are all the niches taken?". Have a guess at how many niches there are on the Internet? It's a bit of a trick question because there are actually an INFINITE amount of niches you could choose to work in. That's because not only are there countless niches NOW - but there are new ones emerging all the time.

Think about cell phones, HDTV, PSPs, satellite TV, even those Robosapien things that the kids love. Niches are created all the time. As well as the HUGE amount of them already out there now.

Is this market mature now? Do you have to be an experienced pro to make it work?

NO! Some people would love you to think so. Dig in. Work hard. Commit to success. And good luck!

I agree with first statement, disagree with second. Niches are created all the time, with new angles, new ("...and improved" :) marketing oxymoron) products.

The reason I disagree with second statement is the examples shown above are all cut-throat niches where it will be very hard to compete head-on.

Without going too deep, when starting up you don't want to directly compete with buy . com, msn, yahoo shopping, amazon . com, shop . com, shopping . com and several other big names, that will guarantee to price you out of top 8, unless you know what you are doing.

I started an AdWords campaign for a buddy who does architectural/aerial photography in the Silicon Valley area, and 10-15 minutes of campaign setup and ~$200/mo in spend has translated to 3-4 new clients each worth $4000-$6000.

This is with 10-15 minutes' effort, 10 keywords, 3 versions of ad copy and no conversion tracking.

The little guy can still get in and make money, yes indeed.
