Adwords - Good For Directiory/Informational Websites?

Adwords - I've skimmed around this subject for far too long... so here's goes -

I've got a few informational/directory websites that do okay with Adsense.

How would opening an Adwords account help me? How does Adwords help a directory type website, i.e. one which does not sell anything, or has a product to offer - other than information?

What does "....you pay for each visit." mean, please? I thought with Adwords you bid for value of an ad - not for each visit to a page?
