Google uses large companies to drive up prices?

I highly doubt ebay would target my keyword...

What is up with eBay, Amazon, Target etc. showing up on so many irrelevant keywords? You can't buy a subsciption to a site from eBay yet eBay is targeting my keyword just for that. I highly doubt eBay would be targetting an adult site term. All it does is drive up prices for the relevant ads.

Today my cpc has doubled. This is annoying because you can be almost certain that eBay's ad isnt going anywhere anytime soon. I've seen it on many other keywords and eBay never budges.

The only reason I say "google uses" is because it's very unlikely that these companies work on their own to include so many irrelevant keywords. I imagine Amazon, eBay etc work with Google to some degree.

Anyone else notice these things?

When you are eBay, you (a) strike deals and (b) bid on everything under the sun ... nearly literally.

Did you know that you used to be able to bid on Matthew Broderick on eBay? You can't bid on a viral infection, but manymany searches pop an eBay result.

Why wouldn't they? Sometimes it's pretty funny ..

P.S. They use the current variant of

{KEYWORD}
to get the ad-writing job done.

The ads you are seeing are almost certainly from affiliates.

eBay and Amazon aren't stupid enough to advertise on irrelevent keywords.

Some affiliates are.

Eventually, they run out of money and give up. But it's like playing whack-a-mole.

Yup its affiliate marketing. Though I wonder what horrible conversion rates they must be having for such keywords and ads. Worse still is that the landing pages are usually totally useless. Was wondering if landing pages having a Quality score too, would have any effect on these ads...no way to know though.

I thought ebay et al were conducting what is known as "brand advertising" by ensuring they appear in adverts for almost every imaginable (and some unimaginable!) terms.

It works too, name one user of the WWW who hasn't heard of "eBay" or "Amazon"?
