Disapproved Ads

Hi All

I have one adgroup that has quite a lot of disapproved ads. The diapproved keywords are all broad match. I haven't received a disapproval email regarding these keywords.

Is this something to do with the new quality guidelines? Could they be too broad and trigger the disapproval? Do I need to change them all to phrase match and will this automatically restart them?

PS some keywords are pretty standard stuff; no poker etc!

Thanks everyone.

Please clarify - disapproved ads, or disapproved keywords?

I've never heard of disapproved keywords - but I know that in some countries you aren't allowed to use trademarked terms as keywords, so it's possible to have disapproved keywords, but not something I've ever seen since I am targeting the U.S.

Hi Simon,

I've been told disapproved keywords are always disapproved by a human reviewer. I get them sometimes and wonder why. The times that I've inquired to Google they said it was done in error and changed them to active.

I can see how certain keywords may warrant disapproval but the ones I get always leave me scratching my head! I've also noticed that if you delete them and re-enter them, they'll normally go to active by themselves. In fact, I recall the most recent ones. They are still active weeks later and when I just searched my ad came up.

They can happen in any country you target including the US.

One of the "Custom Reports" lists "Disapproved" keywords as a choice you can filter by. Display only rows that match specific criteria and choose "keywords" and "disapproved" from the respective drop-down boxes.

Fortunately, they are few and far between.

Just an FYI -

The most common reason for disapproved keywords is if you are bidding on trademarked keywords and using dynamic insertion.

In that instance, either the ad or the keyword must be disapproved as its against the TOS to have trademarked keywords in ads.

You also get a disapproved word by default if you use a pharmaceutical or medical keyword.

I am not sure it is human edited (or only human edited), since they return instantly as disapproved. In the above case, there is an option to provide justification to allow, which I presume does require human review.

Not so. Some words trigger a flag in some languages/countries. Give them a call and they will look it up for you and manually improve if a word has been incorrectly disapproved.

Only way to find all disapproved keywords is to check in campaign management. 'Search' function may not always find them.

In case of disapproved ads you can find the reason below the ad - and a suggestion how to improve.

Are you by any chance bidding on keywords unrelated to your site content? For instance, you are bidding on something cheap like "your state plumber" but the ad lands them on a mesothelioma (sorry about the spelling?) targetted content page?
