Avg Position in Adwords Interface

It doesn't appear to be accurate?

Hi everyone,

When looking at keywords in an Adgroup, you see the Avg Pos column which shows your average position of the keyword.

I have one keyword that I've been ensuring is always at position 1-2 via an API script I developed. When I go to Google.com and type in the keyword, my ad is always at position 1 or 2.

In the Adwords interface, it shows the Avg Position for this keyword as 5.2. How is it possible to be at 5.2 when the keyword never even sees position 4?

Is this column known to be inaccurate?

Nope. The Average Position column in your accounts stats is an actual accounting of the average of all of your positions, over whatever date range you're looking at - and is not an estimate. So it may be relied upon to be accurate.

Based on what you've said, my guess is that you are advertising in more than one country or region. In the country in which you are located your position seems to be high. In another country, though, it could easily be another story. If there is lots more competition there, for example, then your position will likely be lower.

Position could also vary with time of day, etc.

However, as an average your position is accurately shown in your account stats.

Hey there,

Thank you for the reply.

Actually, i am *only* advertising in the US. Could it be possible that the content network, which I have enabled and cannot really check, is what is skewing the results that is being reported? For example, I can only make sure I am #1-2 on Google.com's, but not really on the various Adsense sites.

If I am #1-#2 on Google.com, should I be #1-#2 for the content network as well?
