For those not in the United States, today is Martin Luther King Day.
So? I'm at work today, 7-11 is open.
The only things that should be closed today are schools and banks. This ain't no religious holiday.
It's like saying it's okay for them to close on Lincoln's birthday or Valentine's day. At least put a skeleton crew on like any other respectable call center and pay your employees for holiday pay.
I guess you have to pinch every penny you can when you're a "struggling" company like G ;)
Observance of MLK day by businesses varies by region and by industry.
Government offices, the post office, banking, and the stock markets are all shut down. Businesses related to these would be expected to be closed.
Many larger corporations have it as either a regular or "floating" holiday. I'm a programmer, and it's common in my industry for it to be at least a floating holiday. I'd guess that 50% of the industry treats it as a regular holiday.
It probably has greater observance in California than in Montana. I note that Google is located in California. :)
Granted, try getting something done in China during New Years. But on the other hand, MLK Day is not the same as Christmas or Thanksgiving where it would be painful to have to work. I'm working, but I'm in my pajamas so it's not so bad.
Oh, and btw, Google is shooting itself in the foot by making my best keywords (the ones I know would convert) so expensive, even when there are no competitors for it.
To be honest, even though I'm American, I totally forgot about MLK day. So it sort of pissed me off that I couldn't get a hold of anyone when I needed to.
If it was a holiday for Google, their voice message maybe should have indicated that instead of being "temporarily unavailable" which sounds like they're all out to lunch or something. I assumed I was calling within their normal business hours, so the whole thing was just confusing.
My rep finally got in touch with me.
