American Express Verification Code

I am trying to update some billing information for an account with an American Express card. Google asks for a 4 digit verification code, but my accountant insists that this is now a 3 digit code.

Should it be a 3 or 4 digit code? Has this changed recently?

American Express card : on the Platinum Card the CVS Number is right on the front just above the card number on the right hand side .. and it is 4 digits long printed not embossed
