Hello,

I'm pretty new to google AdWords. They are walking me through all the steps. I spent about 3K on marketing last month through google and got about 6K in sales. Not bad but the profit margin is only aout 25% when all is done.

So the Google JumpStart rep tells me to targer my keywords better with very focused keywords. I did and found that the focused keywords are more expensive by about 1000% (that's one thousand percent) or more.

So how exactly is that going to save money if I get less clicks, pay more for them and still get the same conversion rates?

Anyone?

Hi JD,

If you bid on very general words they cost a lot more. Some specific terms cost more, depending on your competition. The more competition you have the more it costs. But these words could bring more profit in the long run. Maybe you can upload a few with a lower bid and see how profitable they are. Sometimes it’s better to spend more to make more.

If you want to save money here is a couple of things you can do:

1.)turn off Content Targeting

a.You can test this if you track your leads/sales through a sourced URL. Set up 2 identical campaigns (lets say campaign A and B), source the destination URL differently. Turn the content targeting off in campaign A and make this campaign’s max CPC higher then campaign B’s. This way Google will serve the campaign with the highest CPC in the search network while the Content Network will serve campaign B (with the lower CPC). This way you can see if you get any leads/sales from the Content Network. If you don’t receive any or the amount you receive doesn’t justify the money you spend on it, then you can turn Content Network off and save $$$$.

b.To turn it off click on the campaign you want from Campaign Management. Once you are in the Campaign go to Edit Campaign Settings. When there you will see a window on the right called Networks. Here you can choose to uncheck the Content Network box.

2.)don’t take the first position

a.Since the first position receives the most clicks it costs the most. More clicks doesn’t mean qualified clicks. Sometimes when you take a lower position you could be paying dollars less and avoiding the casual clickers who aren’t yet sure if they searched the right topic.

If you want to bid on "blue widgets wtih yellow thingys" you can not save money. Because there are 10 people with huge bids on blue widgets and they automaticly outrank you for "blue widgets wtih yellow thingys" if they have that feature turned on. There is no way to really compete by spending lots of time comeing up with long keywords. The lazy morons with more money than brains just bid up the root of a few kw's and they are done. Google makes more money this way instead of getting $0.20 a click or so on the long kw's they get the $1 or whatever they got it bid up to on the root.
