Hi,

Ive just set up my 1st Adwords campain, just a small one at £20 per day and £0.04p a click! :) 20 keywords.

Is there anything I should know as I am very new to this adwords lark!

Thanks in advance

Dont go for expensive or highly relative keyphrases, skirt around the outside and get as many rubbish ones at a cheap price as you can.

It may cost the same at the end of the day but you are more likely to get more traffic.

DOnt forget also that GG Adwords do negative keywords so they wont appear.

e.g. -free

Would mean dont include the word free.

Also use "" and [] around words.

Also I've noticed, that I can start with a higlhy general word "widget" that relates to my area, perhaps a geographic region, or a widget-category, then plug that into any of the keyword tools like overtures, and then take the common ones that DO NOT related well to my target market and negate them, so I get say:

widget
-rental
-cleaning

to cover all other areas of widgeting.

Just something I found usefull, especially on generic terms where your CTR is getting low, you will know that many of the impressions are caused by the most popular unrelated searches listed first on overtures tool.

but keeping the generic term without negations is also good because you see combinations like red widget, blue widget etc.
If these keyphrases apply to your product, you can create special ads for blue or red widgets.

WEll if you are interested in red widgets and use the generic"widgets" you'll simply not use red as a negative. So bit by bit you exclude the "bad" replations of the generic term, and keep the interesting ones and those you haven'T thought of yet.

A quick run on the overture tool will show you uses of your generic term that will get many impressions but are not on topic for you. Those are the ones you want in your negatives.
