I've only just signed up to adwords. Been an adsense publisher for nearly 2 years, and seeing if adwords works for me.
Welcome to AdWords david_uk! I wish you the best of success.
Anyway, is it better to have a few relevant keywords or loads? Many of the suggestions from the keywords tool are duplicates - does it make sense to add all of these?
Ordinarily, I'd launch into a long passionate post all about using very carefully crafted keyword list with the 'right number' of very targeted keywords.
Fortunately for those who have heard my speech before, I have only a short time to post right now. So breath a sigh of relief. (Warning: I may try to find one of my speeches later, though, and post a link...)
For now, I'll just say that (IMO) it is best to not think about the raw number of keywords. Instead focus on creating very targeted Ad Groups in which you use a carefully crafted list of keywords that are highly related to the subject of the ad.
Very briefly, I think the 'right number' of keywords is all keywords that are highly relevant to what the ad offers, and none that aren't.
Just using thousands of keywords because you can is not a good idea, IMO. I think a short list of great keywords is far more valuable than an endless list of poor ones.
And if you're using broad matched or phrase matched keywords, then be sure to use negative keywords, to protect yourself from being seen by people who aren't looking for what you've got.
And if some of this doesn't make sense, don't worry. You will soon come up to speed - and this Forum and the AdWords Help Center are great resources.

Thought I'd toss in a little note to say in some cases I completely agree with the above statement.
I have some accounts that number in 100s of thousands of keywords - but those aren't always the true success stories.
I was looking at an account today with 17 different campaigns. Each campaign is related to a very specific product. It's been very successful. It has 278 total keywords. It wouldn't surprise me if in the next 6 months we've go through more ads than the account has keywords.
Sometimes, smaller and more targeted is better.
