Are smaller Adgroups the key to better CTR?

Is it better to have a large number of Adgroups with a small number of keywords, rather than the other way around? It seems to me that you could get a better CTR by being more targetted in your keywords.

e.g. You have an advert on food. Rather than having:

food recipes, food suppliers, food disposal

...all in one Adgroup, you would have 3 seperate Adgroups targetting each. Yes, I am aware of dynamic keyword insertion but having seperate Adgroups would let you have dedicated landing pages for each area and thus increase clickthrough rates there. But also in the ad itself you can have better descriptions on line 1 and 2 and thus improve CTR.

Would love to hear peoples opinions on this aswell as experiences in doing this, if any. Any problems with this approach?

Thanks,

Jon

Jon12345, I think you are very much on the right track with your thinking that being more targeted will give you better results CTR (and most probably, better ROI as well).

The title of your of you post makes me want to add that it isn't the size that makes the difference, though - it's the targeting.

So, of the following three options, the second one is likely to give you the best results (assuming all the keywords are well targeted) since it'll give you to greatest number of (targeted) impressions.

1) Targeted Ad Group with 10 very targeted keywords

2) Targeted Ad Group with 100 very targeted keywords

3) Untargeted Ad Group with 1,000 untargeted keywords

Option one would give you targeted impressions, but a smaller number of them - and option three would give you lots more impressions, but they wouldn't be targeted.

So, bottom line, don't shoot for a particular number of keywords. Instead shoot for a list of keywords that are all well targeted to the subject of the ad, and let the number of keywords fall where it may.

Hope that helps.
