Adsense question.

I am new to Google and want to advertise my website. How does adsense work? Do the people who bid a higher amount get the top position? Or is it a random event. The people who bid higher get the top position a higher percentage of time?

First, I think you mean AdWords (adsense is for publishers) as far as visibility goes.

On the easy explination, postition is determined by CPC x CTR (cost per click times click through rate).

On the more difficult side, here's an example to start reading:
