Amazing difference in Adsense to Search impression ratios.

Some are 70:1 others are 1:100 for similar KWs

Some of my Ads for certain KW phrases are shown on Adsense sites about 70 times MORE than they are shown on Google.

Other Ads are shown 100 times LESS on Adsense sites compared to Google.

The KWs are different for sure but they are in the same industry. (eg '...rental...' and '...accommodation...' are similar but different)

These ratios have been consistent for months and the numbers are relatively high (1 mill impressions) so statistical abberations associated with small numbers are not in play here.

I can't figure how Adwords selects certain KWs to be shown on particular Adsense sites and obviously others to be completely excluded.

OK been 48 hours and no comment.

Let's have a survey!

a) Topic already covered extensively in posts
b) Still getting over hangovers post conference
c) Don't understand this strange a:b notation
d) Don't understand any part of post
e) No ideas about any part of post
f) Wrong forum (though surely would have been moved by now)
g) Hm... there is no (g) but please feel free to add you own survey points as I'm sure I left something out :)

Regards

Tom

g) Hm... there is no (g) but please feel free to add you own survey points as I'm sure I left something out :)

g)users have an algo built in their heads that, when scanning posts, parse for keywords and phrases that rank high or low in a relevancy scale and the post has "adsense" in the header. :-P

(eg '...rental...' and '...accommodation...' are similar but different)

Is it possible that people that do a search mostly type in "rental" but many sites that have such related materials and are hosting adsense have the word "accommodation" sprinkled in their texts? Just a thought. I could be wrong. I usually am. :-)

Thanks Dr_X

Firstly
g) you may well be right.

Secondly
'...rental...' and '...accommodation...' are close yet different and one might expect a difference in impressions in the order of say up to 10 times. I am talking about 7000 times difference.

So it gets back to how Google selects sites for AdWord ads.
Maybe few AdWordians have thought deeply about this. (yeah sure Tom)

Comment: Over the 3 years I have been a member here I have noticed STRONGLY:
a) When a post tries to dig deeply into 'what's really going on' the experts are far and few between because I suspect it enters the realm of commercial advantage. In other words "I have spent x years working this out and I ain't gonna tell anyone". And fair enough too.
b) Posts that ask "which button do I press in the AdWords interface to achieve xyz" are answered speedily or referred to a topic URL. In other words the simple meat and potatos stuff.
c) Posts started by WebmasterWorld heavyweights are fully subscribed.
d) Any other observations welcome.

When Google does it's magic to determine contextual relevancy of keywords, it's matching quite a few criteria at once. However, one of the most important is it looks at every keyword within a group to determine the group's theme as much as any individual keyword.

Secondly, let's take a quick look into your two keywords for this project and see if the number tailoring you're seeing makes sense.

Accommodation: A quick search on a few sources suggest that this keyword is most often used with a geographic search qualifier. Therefore, the volume on this word seems to be regional based, or travel destination based, to a specific location. This is not a word that would seem to get a huge amount of targeted relevant impressions unless geographic qualified. Also, while the top few keywords in this area get a lot of search, the numbers trail off very quickly (a quick use of a public tool, Overture suggestion, is stating the 10th word has only 15k searches).

Rental:
This word has a lot of meanings (cars, DVDs, houses, etc). Rental is a generic description term that is usually matched to an industry and not a geographic search. Vertical searches are generally higher than geographic search numbers. In comparison to the above, the 15th most popular rental term is 240k searches, a significant difference from the above 15k.

The next step would be for you to look at the sites serving these types of ads to see how many geographic based vs vertical based sites are in the industry. I often find that good geographic targeting on AdSense is much more difficult than vertical based targeting in terms of total impressions.

Firstly: Many thanks eWhisper for your efforts they are much appreciated.

From my searches is this forum it seems there is not much knowledge on the topic of how Google places ads on Adsense. At least not much compared to the wealth of knowledge out there on Google SERPs. Am I correct?

Yes '...accommodation...' is used with a regional qualifier in my KWs, you are correct.
'...rental...' is used with '...holiday...' as a qualifier.

Your arguments for 'accommodation' and 'rental' certainly makes sense but unless I am misinterpreting your conculsions you may be surprised that 'accommodation' is the one that appears many many more times on Adsense compared to 'rental'.

That is why (maybe one of the reasons) I cannot get my head around it.
