this hasn't happen to me before

I noticed earlier today that one of my high CTR keywords had been disabled. In the past I have just deleted those words and added others. However, today I was busy doing other things and just left the keyword there. Then tonight, I visited the same adgroup and that disabled keyword was back to normal status. I was under the impression that once a keyword was disabled, it was gone for good in that adgroup. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. Any advice AWA?

I swear that I have seen a couple of disabled keywords come back to normal status before.

I wish I would have seen it before I deleted a load...

That's news to me. Sometimes it's possible to reintroduce a keyword in the same group (after tweaking the ads and/or the CPC) but I've never seen it happen spontaneously.

It was a first time for me, too. It might have happened before, but I deleted the keywords too quickly. I wonder if keywords are like the ads? Someone reviews them, but then a high up could over rule their decision. That might be the case here. The keyword in question generated over 50 clicks yesterday with an average postion of 1.1 and a 4.3 CTR.

I do know that the AdWords system can occasionally 'ping' disabled keywords, and let them run again for a short time, by way of collecting more data. But I've only heard of this happening for short periods. And I certainly wouldn't let it be a reason to hang on to disabled keywords.

I also wonder if may have been a delay in updating stats. I.e. the disabled label was applied before the actual stats had been delivered. This can happen when a keyword accrues impressions very quickly, as is often the case for single-word and general keywords.

Nope. The system that disables keywords doesn't include human intervention - even from managers. It's all math. ;)

Is it still running? If so, and you're truly curious, you might want to contact AdWords support and they can probably have the tech folks take a look.

Nope, this morning it was disabled again. I think you figured out what happened. That's why you make the big bucks! :)
