Ads getting served 2x on same page

2 Adwords from same advertiser?

Has anyone experienced double ad serving?

To clarify, if you do a keyword search, in the adwords results on right hand side (not premium position) you get 2 different ads displayed from same company?

I have experienced it consistently for at least 3 weeks now.

Is this a bug or an exploit?

In Google's Words:

Can I create multiple ads for a set of keywords?

"Yes. For each Ad Group you create, you can create as many ads as you like. Because they are triggered by the same keywords, these ads will rotate evenly for your keywords. Google automatically keeps track of the clickthrough rate (CTR) for each of your ads; you can determine which ads perform best by logging in to your account and viewing your campaign reports. You can then refine or delete poorly performing ads.

If you want different ads to appear for different keywords, you can create multiple Ad Groups or campaigns. Once you've finished picking keywords and prices for the first group of ads, you'll have an opportunity to create additional Ad Groups and campaigns. Your ads will rotate evenly if you use the same keyword in different Ad Groups so you don't have multiple ads on the same page. "

I am referring to when you have 2 ads being served simultaneously on the same exact page.

Surely that is not intentional by google?

xszer,

understood. i can see why my answer didn't suffice -sorry.

i just tried it, and what happens is although I create a new campaign targeting the same keywords, ADwords recognizes that the campaigns are from the same account and it simply rotates one of the ads in not both.

the funny thing is on the keyword that i ran the test on there are three ads. 1 being mine, and the next two from the exact same company, just as you are suggesting. you know who the company is? local.yahoo.com

so back at square one. it is happening, but ADwords doesn't allow me to do it. Can it be accomplished by simply creating a new account, instead of a new campaign, i wonder.

Do those ads go to the EXACT same landing page?
Might they be redirected from an affiliate link which sets a cookie?

It is the target URL that you should be looking at.

You can type www.amazon.com in the space provided for "URL shown" and might get it by the editors. But the link the tracks your sales would be the affiliates link.

in the case that i am referring to, the referring URL is the same. the user arrives on the same page when clicking- again, local.yahoo.com.

Ditto for me - the user is taken to the exact same page from the 2 different ads for the same company. And it does not appear to be any type of affiliate link.

Technically you shouldn't be able to do this, but I suppose that if you had two accounts, google wouldn't know right away that the person had two accounts with the same link. A quick email to cust. serv. will remedy that. They will pull one of the ads and probably close one of the accounts too.

If what they are doing is legit, you might get an explination and be able to share with the class. :)

Thanks for all the input. I did bring this up with customer service 3 weeks ago and again 10 days ago. Unfortunately no response yet.

The advertiser is running two accounts which is not allowed by Google. This is the only way to get 2 or more adverts shown at the same time on the same page.

Quote from Google....Google maintains a high standard for the quality of our advertisements and our user experience. In order to preserve the quality and diversity of ads running on Google, we do not permit advertisers to run multiple accounts as this could result in double-serving.

Sometimes the advertiser uses different links eg www.widget.com and www.widget.com/ to help avoid detection.

Either they, they don't allow it. Simply report the advertiser using multiple accounts and google will remove.

This was Google response to me

Thank you for the example. I looked at the search results and saw the same ads as you mentioned in your email. To maintain the quality and diversity of ads running on Google, we do not permit advertisers to run multiple ads
on the same page, and the situation you brought up is against our policy. We will investigate and resolve this as soon as possible. Optimally this will be resolved after three business days.
