I've finally acquired my first client to manage his google ads account, as soon as I went in, I was surprised by the amount of data within his account, I don't even know from where to start, so I am a bit lost here - I don't even know like what to do at this point. I just need guidance from guys here please, like what should I look for in his account to optimize it? The account looks so different from what is in the Google Ads course which I finished 8 months ago, The client doesn't like his AD management agency, they don't care much and he believes he is overspending on ads due to a lack of optimization, so now I want to spend most of my time on his account to help him and also gain practical experience, as this is my first time now to go live on a real account, but not sure from where to start.

I Would appreciate your guidance a lot right now, thank you.

Some thoughts ...

Start by checking the geographic targeting for every campaign. Make sure the ads are only being shown to users in places that the business could actually serve. If the geo-targeting was already good, leave it alone, but if not, being more restrictive about where the ads are shown might be a big win.

Next, go on a hunt for ad impressions that are off-target in some way, and build up your negative keyword lists. The mission is to reduce the number of poorly targeted impressions.

Go through the query reports for every campaign and watch for queries that are a poor match for what the business offers. Also, spend some time doing proactive research with a keyword suggestion tool. If you spot something, identify the strategic word(s) to add to your negative keyword lists. You don't always have to add the whole query to your negative keywords; a single word is often sufficient.

Example: suppose you sell purple widgets exclusively but you see in the query reports that your ad has appeared on searches for green widgets. Add the word "green" to your negative list(s).

Checking the query reports isn't a "one and done" operation; make it part of your regular routines as you work on the account.

One issue to watch for is your ads showing on queries for song lyrics, game names, book titles, and so on that happen to have some vocabulary overlap with queries you're trying to target.

Example: If you were a clothing designer selling dresses, there's little value in having your ad displayed when people search for the film or book titled "Devil in a Blue Dress". Block the word "devil".

If you can reduce the number of wasted impressions, your ads might show less often but they'll likely have a better CTR. That's good news for both costs and conversions.

There are many ways to optimize but if you started with those they'd likely give you some easy wins while you get your bearings for further optimization.

is it possible that they have linked Ads and Analytics and you are seeing additional "unexpected" data?

Thank you guys for the suggestions, it has helped me, a lot.

I have created a campaign and on the first 24 hours, I got 67 impressions and 4 clicks, I got some data and new keywords suggestions, so I added them to my list and also added the negative ones.

But the cost was high, I wanted to reduce the CPC, so I bid lower, then for the last 48 hours, my ads haven't received a single impression or a click, yet when I search on my phone or on google AD diagnosis, 97% of my keywords are still showing up on google. So I am not sure why I'm not receiving any impressions but my ads are showing on Google?

What could be the problem here?
