Google says is blocked 3.1 billion ads and restricted a further 6.4 billion ads in 2021.

We also continued to invest in our automated detection technology to effectively scan the web for publisher policy compliance at scale. Due to this investment, along with several new policies, we vastly increased our enforcement and removed ads from 1.3 billion publisher pages in 2020, up from 21 million in 2019. We also stopped ads from serving on over 1.6 million publisher sites with pervasive or egregious violations.

This is absolutely incredible.

Are we talking about attempted fraud? Illegal products and services? #*$!? Lies and misinformation regarding social and political issues? Or what?

edit: well I see that the system censored one of my words. Let me try "p**n"

I can't find a figure from 2020, but in 2012 Google was reckoned to be serving 3 billion ads a day.

That's a huge number of ads to block, but it's also an example of how many people are failing to avoid following the rules, either deliberately or in error.

It's worth noting how advertising has shifted over the years from print to online on a global basis. It's been constant growth for many years and is likely to continue to grow.

As a general point, I think there will be greater dilution of funds into other forms of advertising and marketing, such as sponsorship. I doubt that will make much of a dent in the overall totals.

The internet's getting pretty swampy, I'd say we're approaching specturdular.
