Hi guys, I'm a complete noob at this google adwords stuff. I've been reading the info Google give you and have a couple of questions if you dont mind answering...

I understand that you need to find regular expressions. If you find a series of keywords that produces a large amount of hits and its pretty well targetted the bid per click is very large too. What i dont understand is how you compete with companies which have large amounts of money to put bids down with? I understand Google takes into account the page relevance etc but how does this help? at the end of the day isn't it the highest bidder?

Thanks for your help
Mox.

Hello Mocksy, welcome to webmaster world.

If you play around with adwords a bit, you'll find that in many expensive niches, there may be many high bids on "widget" but that you may be able to bid on "cheap widget", "red widget", "widget facts" etc for much lower prices.

If I had a $50 per day budget, I would rather pay 5 cents per click for 1000 on-target related terms that were searched once per day that pay $1 per click for 50 searches on "widget".

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Mocksy!

Not really, no.

Your position on the page is determined by two factors, measured equally. The two factors are: the relevance of your ads to users, as measured by your CTR (clickthrough rate), and your Maximum CPC. So the CTR is just as important as what you are paying per click. And you can actually appear above someone who is paying more, if your CTR is better.

If you play around with adwords a bit, you'll find that in many expensive niches, there may be many high bids on "widget" but that you may be able to bid on "cheap widget", "red widget", "widget facts" etc for much lower prices.

I agree with PatrickDeese that this is a good strategy.

Instead of using the most obvious keywords (which will be more competitive - and thus more expensive, because everyone is already using them) you'll want to find less obvious, very targeted keywords. These will often be much less expensive. And while they'll probably be searched-on less often, if you collect a few of them together, between them you can get the impressions you need.

Below are a couple of resources you may find useful:

* Some links to keyword help:
[adwords.google.com...]

* Demos and Guides: (See "Kewyord Matching Options" and "Optimization Tips" in particular.)
[adwords.google.com...]

* Learning Center: (See "Kewyord Matching", "Pricing/Ranking", and "Beginning Optimization" in particular.)
[google.com...]

Hope this helps.
