I remember with PPC first came out, on Overture.

At first I was appalled by the idea of paying for visitors.

It made me think "if people can pay their way to the top, what is my value to my clients".
So I had to jump into the PPC game.

I started campaigns with Overture, when the PPC was .01.
A penny a click for an immigration lawyer wasn't a bad deal.

I was hooked.

Things have changed over the last 15+ years, and I have gained a vast amount of knowledge due to paid advertising. I have been able to apply that knowledge to organic search and onsite conversion optimization.

Some people truly don't understand that the core conversion value of a click is a mixture of $'s + data you acquire. Try to find that in Analytics today.

Happy Birthday Adwords,

Made me think of the "old days" when all was wild and woolly. :)

I suspect more than a few here date all the way back to 1200baud modem BBS systems and marketing over a single telephone line system. I know I was doing it back then for local companies on RBBS with ASCII graphics based systems and none this commentary has anything to do with Adwords. Sorry, just a memory phart.

Meanwhile, Adwords does work for many and has worked for a few of my clients.

“The advertising business model do not always correspond to providing quality search results to users…”

“Advertising income often provides an incentive to provide poor quality search results.”

“We believe the issue of advertising causes enough mixed incentives that it is crucial to have a competitive search engine that is transparent.”

Again Larry and Sergey said..
we expect that advertising funded search engines will be inherently biased towards the advertisers and away from the needs of the consumers.

I was appalled by the idea of paying for visitors - Snap ! Started using Overture on a site and found it worked ! Amazing feeling at the time spent a massive £125 per month or 3c placement.
