I don't understand Current maximum CPC

Hi everyone,

I'm slowly getting the hang of Ad Words. Something I don't understand is the Current Maximum CPC option at the top of the page. This is where you click on the Edit button and it allows you to: "Make changes to your keyword list or maximum cost-per-click in the boxes below. Click Re-estimate Traffic to see how your changes could affect your clicks and costs."

But I don't want to default all the key words to my Max CPC, which is what that tool does because I've assigned different Max CPCs for each keyword depending on how they are doing as an average position.

It seems to me that that box should be called "Minimum CPC" because the words with zero or few impressions have lower Max CPCs than the words with higher Max CPCs. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but the functionality of that tool sure is to me!

Can anyone explain this to me?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Punditman!

I think I can explain this in a way that'll make sense:

* The setting you refer to is the default for the entire Ad Group, only if none of the keywords have a higher or lower Max CPC set for them, individually.

* However, if you have given any keyword either a higher or lower Max CPC, then those individual settings will 'trump' the default.

* In other words, the default will apply only to keywords that do not have an individual Max CPC set for them.

Yes, it now does make sense...why they can't explain this better remains a mystery...thanx!

I think alot of people are not watching the little flash tutorials that Google offers in their Information center. After I watched all of those, I learned so much about Adwords I felt almost professional. heh

Completely agreed, Xeal_PM. And welcome to WebmasterWorld, by the way!

Since the Mods are kind enough to let me post the occasional helpful URL, here is a link to the resource that Xeal_PM mentioned:

Learning Center
[google.com...]

Another good resource is the searchable FAQ, here:
[adwords.google.com...]

On that page, for example, a search on 'max cpc' or 'default cpc' leads you to some good info on the subject, at the link below. (Although I can see that the exact 'flow' is not directly addressed so much as implied):

What are my options when I set my max CPCs?
[adwords.google.com...]

AGREED! There should be a link to the learning center somewhere in the signup process or at least the email G sends to you upon confirming your email address for new accounts.

While the tutorials are made for the 'professionals program', it's still the single best thing Google has ever done to promote AdWords. Now if they could just let people know it exists.

I SO agree with you eWhisper. I'll be quoting you, as "a highly respected AdWords Forum Moderator" in my Advertiser Feedback report tomorrow, to see if we can't light a fire.

A little name dropping can't hurt, eh? ;)

Thanks for the welcome. I'm glad you guys agree. And I definately agree with those resources needing to be exposed more. I had no idea they existed until I set up a MMC account.

HAHA - that's funny, AWA.

Thought it was me who should be dropping your name to the good folks at Google ;)
