how do the keywords work?

I'm stumped. Working with Google Ads in the search is clear enough.
But how do keywords work in the Display Network?

I set up a campaign in the Display network. Set 20 keywords, reaonable bid. Not much result.

I paused all the keywords, and raised the bid. Now I'm doing much better.

But the keywords are supposed to trigger the ad, right? If all the keywords are paused, that is more or less the same as no keywords. How can I bid on no keywords?

Can somebody explain how keywords work in the Display Network?

iirc they do use general keywords, and the advert itself to determine where the ads are displayed. Personally I don't like the display network, in almost every case where we started using it we have cancelled it now because the sites we were displayed on were just too random and incredible.

There is a report you can run, "search query" or is it "ad placement" I can't remember but it is well worth playing around with the reports until you find the one that lists the sites that your ads have appeared on. You may be in for a surprise, namely that google may have been wasting your money!

Happy hunting.

The Display Network is built around themes, and you use keywords in your campaigns just to let Google know what the themes are you want to target.

Keywords themselves don't trigger the ads.

If you do some searching around in this forum for Display Network (and Content Network, which is what it used to be called) you should find a lot of information on how it works.

There's also a link to the Forum Library up at the top which has useful posts on a lot of AdWords topics.
