I'm seeing pictures of products on top of the google adwords on the right side. Is this new, or have I just been missing it ?

I guess they are from google shopping. I've just never seen them on the right over the adwords ads.

Google has been testing this feature for almost a year (or more) now. I'm surprised this is the first you've seen it to be honest. The products are pulled from Google Base feeds, but until recently you had to manage this program through the Google Affiliate Network. You had to basically bid a percentage of sales to Google if the click converted, just like any other affiliate program.

This is an Adwords product and will soon be available to everyone to use via the Adwords UI. Still products are pulled from the Google Base feeds, but you will be able to bid on a cost per click or cost per conversion model. It will be interesting to see how the two bidding structures compete.

Thus far, the space is dominated by the larger retailers and I would assume this will be hard to overcome since a big part of this ranking algorithm is based on conversions and not just clicks anymore.

I guess my keywords just haven't been popping up with the ads. I check my keywords "coat of arms" every single day. Today is the first day.
So, when it's a part of Adwords, will I be able to bid on it even if I don't have my products in Google Base ? Will it have a place to upload my own visual ad ?

Thank you for the excellent info.

No, you must have a Google base account and a product feed to link to your Adwords account.

Not all searches will trigger Product Ads.

They just announced rolling out those "Product Ads" to everyone, it had been in a (large) beta.
