Content network: Keyword Types

Use broad, phrase and exact or only broad?

I have campaigns that are only active in the content network. For each keyword I use the broad, phrase and exact match keywords.

I'm wondering if AdWords is using all those match types of keywords for the content network or if it is only looking at -for example- broad match keywords and ignores the other match types.

Because I use seperate campaigns for the content network (and also target different countries in each campaign) I'm running quickly out of the max amount of keywords I can use. So I would like to know if I can delete some keywords in my content network campaigns (without negative effect) and free up some keyword-space.

Keyword match types are useless and doesn't make any difference at all when using content network.

If your keywords are most relevant then dont delete the keywords as you wont get data as to which keyword is performing and which is not in content network. You should probably run a placement performance report to block the websites which aren't giving you any conversions or the CPA is higher (decide based on your profitability margins).

I would suggest going for placement campaign (select the website list of your own related to your industry and dont go for automatic or broad category specific).

I know about placement reports, blocking websites and targetting specific websites. I'm using the content network for many years with good ROI. So that is not a problem

I was only wondering if there is a different between a content network campaign using the following keywords:

example widget
[example widget]
"example widget"

Versus a campaign using only:

example widget

I just removed all phrase and exact match keywords and will see if it makes any difference.

As far as I am aware, match types wont make any difference. Keep us posted on the results of your testing though.

As mentioned above, match types don't make a difference on the Content Network. Ad - Site matchups occur by theme, not by specific keyword.

Google considers all terms used in content campaigns as BROAD match. There is no need/reason/advantage to provide match types in Content campaigns.

No more than 50 keywords (if more, Google only uses 50) - but usually 1-12 is enough.

All keywords are broadmatched - one version is fine.

Google does examine negative keywords; so feel free to use those in addition to your other keywords.
